One stencil, many ways.

Regular readers know that we enjoy showing a stencil design with alternate ways of using it. Today the design is FS4, a Chinoiserie tree of life stencil which we based upon the stencilled decoration found at Drottningholm Theatre in Sweden. My brother in law and I both used it in our homes for a kitchen and a bedroom.

I used a smaller sized stencil and a subdued pallette in a sitting room for this client.

Lastly, this is a detail from a sample board to show another client how a dining room could look with stencils and silver leaf.  

It looks quite different when colours are changed don't you think?

Rachel's New House

Just a bit of an introduction...I've bought a new house.  Yes, I shall be moving out of Stocksfield Hall after 15 years, but only a few miles down the road.  It is going to be hard adjusting to a commute longer than a 30 second walk.  It was built in 1935, just my sort of era.  We got the keys on Friday and have spent the weekend lifting the carpets and starting to take the wood chip paper and artex plaster off the walls.  It is everywhere so is a very large task, but we need smooth walls so I can stencil.  Last night we hit the living room and look what started to reveal itself:

It is only right that my house should have some old stencilling.  We worked at it a bit more and here is the full design:

The rest of the room has to be stripped and am I am not sure if there will be anything else, but it was rather fun to find this, especially at the end of a hard day's work.  Aside from the damage to it, the colours are as vibrant as ever.  It may well get covered up again, but will be there for future generations to find.

Over the next several months, I will be posting more about my house as I redo each room.  There will be before and after shots as well as mentioning any other interesting finds and useful techniques as we go.  The house retains some original features, but others are sadly gone.  Whilst I won't be doing a totally authentic restoration job on the house, I will be putting some 1930's features back in.  Art Deco is one of our favourites styles so most of the stencilling and decor will have that flavour.  We've just added some new stencils to our site based on a 1930's china pattern.  I am sure Helen will post more on this, but I am rather taken with them so it may be used in my house somewhere as well.

Papa's Got A Brand New Pig Bag

Mama can have one too. They will find my stencilled bags at the For Queen and Corgi shop at Folksy.com or buy one at the Christmas Fairs that my  'Super Stenciler' friend Sabina and I are attending. The bags are hand painted so each one is is different.

Do you remember the 80's song Papa's got a brand new pig bag by Pig Bag? I can not get it out of my head since stencilling Pigs Might Fly. The flying pig stencil is a border design, a line of three flying pigs, I just messed up the formation a little. There is an all-over repeat version of this design too.  Wall, curtains or ceiling of flying pigs anyone?

Roll out the Christmas Tree

For the past few years I have been meaning to stencil a roller blind with a large Christmas Tree design. I would pierce the fabric so that I could hang baubles and garlands onto it. I could unroll it each December, decorate it, then, when the celebration was over roll it up ready to unfurl next year. Looks like Ikea is there ahead of me with their Christmas Tree fabric.

They have used it as an advent calender, isn't that sweet? 

I am still going to make my stencilled tree on a roller blind (with the workings removed) but I may need this one from IKEA whilst I procrastinate.

A similar idea was the antlers stencilled onto board that I did a few years ago.

Creating for Christmas

"Looks like rain dear" replied Mrs Santa Claus when asked about the weather. She may have liked this stencilled card and plate.

The basic reindeer stencil is simple and inexpensive and paint, glitter or texture paste are all suitable media to stencil the reindeer design. Here's how.

 

I have been a bit fancy by over stencilling the reindeer shape with another design. You can use odds and ends in your stencil collection to do this, or a plastic doily!

This is one of my faves...VN154 Monarch Of the Glen. It is a large repeat stencil from our Vintage Collection.

We tweaked the motif to fit the canvas in this picture.  The Monarch of the Glen repeating stencil could look fabulous as a feature wall in a bathroom? What do you think? Towels can hang from hooks as if attached to the antlers!

Stencil design inspired by cross stitch

A recent post on our Stencil.Library Facebook page intrigued our readers and I have had a few enquiries about the stencil that was featured.

I must stress that this stencil was a special order and we designed it to be smaller. Here are my work experience students stencilling test pieces with the original.

We created a rose stencil in a similar style, both stencils were inspired by cross stitch.

Here are a couple more rose stencils inspired by tapestry and embroidery. All of these stencils are available by special order, just email, phone, or leave a comment to get further details from us.

More flights of fancy with stencils of birds

Following on from last months post featuring stencils of birds on walls, fabrics.. and carpets. Here are a few more feathery stencils from The Stencil Library.

Chinoiserie wall stencils: Panels CH1-CH3. The same stencil has been painted with a soft, metallic silver paint.

In the following two pictures both these customers chose an oversized version of JA116 Bird and Blossom stencil to decorate a wall behind their bed.

Another stenciller used JA116 to decorate this planter. We have reconfigured the same motif into a repeating design to cover large areas with allover pattern. Find it in our Vintage Selection

SIB33 Seagull is a simple and inexpensive stencil design. 

The seagull stencil is shown here on a colour washed wall painted by me and (below) on a furniture re-vamp stencilled and photographed by Faded Grey Home Interiors. 

We still have many more photos of projects featuring stencils of birds, so expect a third post on the subject.

Paisley stencils help to mouse proof the pantry

The nights have turned frosty and mice are coming in from the fields and checking us out as a winter residence. Until a new cat arrives we will need to make our food stuff nibble proof. Plastic containers from IKEA decorated with our SIB16S Paisley stencil is a good (and pretty) start. Another version of this Paisley design is one of the 15 stencils given with the book Stencil It.
