Recently two members of my family bought a home in Italy. Knowing that they are fans of art deco, Italy and stencilled decoration I thought that it would be a nice surprise to combine those elements and design a stencil collection for their new home....
..and this is it.
We liked the new, Art Deco Oranges and Birds stencil so much that it has been added it to our on line stencil shop and it is availabe now. My inspiration came from an early 20th century tea service by J&G Meakin. I have a few pieces of it.
The new stencil collection has repeating designs, motifs and borders. Stencils can be combined or used singly. There is so much decorative potential with this collection. I can envisage large pieces of furniture stencilled with the bird repeat and staircase runners, floors or swathes of fabric might suit any of the repeat patterns.
I would use the border of oranges, pendants and bird motif set on the walls. Borders tend to decorate the tops of walls but I think that this would suit being stencilled on the lower portion as an alternative. Both sides of the pendants can be used to stencil a mirror image.
I don't know whether the couple's window furnishings will be simple but if they are going for flamboyant then the large pendants of oranges could look grand stencilled over swags and tails surrounding the curtains. Otherwise a simple blind, stencilled with the oranges repeat could look very jolly....and Mediterranean. I think the pair will paint the walls white which will suit the style of their house. If this were being used in more northern climates a coloured background might compliment the design's historic origins. Lots of building work still has to be done in Italy before they can enjoy adding the finishing touches, they never read this blog so the surprise won't be ruined.

oh, but I do read it.......

Ha ha, you kept that quiet. You might enjoy Rachel's posts about the discoveries in her 1930 house next week. She fancied this design but has had Chips make her a 'special'
